Popular Cultures, 20th Century South Africa
Tyler Fleming received his Ph.D. in African history from the University of Texas at Austin in 2009, his M.A. in 2003 from the University of Texas at Austin, and his B.A. from Allegheny College (Meadville, PA) in 2001. His research interests focus on popular cultures (namely sport, music, literature, and theatre) in South Africa throughout the twentieth century as well as transnational interactions between Africa and the African Diaspora.
Before joining the faculty at Columbus State, Dr. Fleming taught at Florida International University in Miami, FL. He currently teaches courses in African history and the Black Atlantic in addition to the World History survey courses. Beyond being involved with the history department, Dr. Fleming seeks to enhance the visibility of Africa on the campus and is active with the African Studies Certificate program with the Center for International Education.
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Fleming has received various awards including a Fulbright IIE fellowship, a Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad grant, and Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship. He was also given the University of Texas at Austin’s Graduate Student Excellence Award in African Studies in 2009. Dr. Fleming has published writings in numerous academic journals, including History in Africa and The International Journal of History of Sport , and is the co-editor of Music, Performance and African Identities (Routledge, 2011) . He is currently revising his doctoral dissertation for publication.
