Department of History, Geography, and Philosophy

About the Department

History, geography, and philosophy are central to a rich, immersive liberal arts education. At CSU, you'll develop a deeper appreciation for the past, understand how the past influences the present, and make important connections between geography and human history.

The department offers several programs. Each is designed to foster intellectual curiosity and technical skill. At CSU, you'll collaborate with professional geographers and learn how to apply geographic information system (GIS) technology to historical research.

We believe the best education happens inside - and outside - the classroom. As a student, you'll have access to internship opportunities with the Columbus Museum, the Carter Center, the Roosevelt Institute, the Andersonville National Historic Site, and many others.

Mark Sciuchetti

Since graduating from CSU, I completed a Masters in Musicology degree and a PhD in Geography from Florida State University. I decided to continue in my education by combining my passions for music, history, and GIS by working on the geography of music. Most of my research currently focuses on the ways in which women composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries have composed American place and identity. I have presented on this topic at national and international conferences, and am currently working on a composition of the Hudson River. I benefitted from the support of many members of the faculty... What I learned at CSU helped me to become a better writer and communicator.

Dr. Caroline Newhall

From the precolonial era to the late nineteenth century, Native Americans’, Africans’, and Europeans’ understandings of slavery, law, and war influenced their behavior as enemies and as allies in North America. Each had their particular ideas regarding law, warfare, and slavery, and each confronted one another’s strange and familiar ideas of what slavery meant through both conflict and compromise. Explore this history and more in Dr. Newhall's Slavery, Law, and Warfare in North America course.
