History Scholarships
The following scholarships and awards are available exclusively to students within the History and Geography department at Columbus State University:
Alfonso Biggs Scholarship
The Alfonso Biggs Scholarship was established to reward the young scholarly careers of entering first-year students who will major in History at Columbus State University. The scholarship honors Mr. Biggs' lifelong interest in academic excellence and his support for undergraduate education in the humanities and social sciences. Recipients of this prize shall be known as Biggs Scholars.
Eligibility
Awarded to a deserving high school student, majoring in History, who has been accepted
into the CSU first-year class and demonstrates outstanding academic achievement, skills
and interest in history, the potential to contribute to the collegiate environment,
and financial need.
Applications
Applications for the Biggs Scholarship can either be mailed to Dr. Ryan Lynch, Department of History & Geography, Columbus State University, 4225 University Avenue, Columbus, Georgia, 31907, or emailed to lynch_ryan1@columbusstate.edu.
Applications should include:
- Your name, address, and contact information
- A recommendation letter from a high school history teacher (or someone who is familiar with your work)
- Your high school transcript
- An original essay, limited to 200 words, explaining your commitment to the study of history at Columbus State University
Award
This award may be renewable for three years while the student continues in the discipline of History and maintains a 3.0 cumulative average and a 3.3 average in history. The awarded amount is determined by current funding.

The Christine Agnes Gullo Prize in Historical Research and Writing
The purpose of the prize is to promote the scholarly writing of undergraduate majors in History at Columbus State University. The prize honors Ms. Gullo's lifelong interest in history and support for historical knowledge as a key component of the humanities and social sciences. Recipients of this prize shall be known as Gullo Scholars.
Eligibility
Faculty of the CSU Department of History and Geography may annually nominate an original outstanding research paper using both primary and secondary sources for courses of the HIST 3000, 4000, and 5000 level completed at Columbus State University. Evidence of high-quality writing skills, innovative primary source analysis and research, accurate citation, and judicious use of secondary sources are necessary for consideration and award.
Award
The Christine Agnes Gullo Prize is awarded annually provided that members of the faculty submit a paper matching the criteria of the prize.
