Study in the Heart of Uptown Columbus

The Department of History and Geography is housed in an old mill in the heart of the historic district in Columbus, Georgia, right on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. Faculty and students enjoy the lovely RiverPark campus and Riverwalk while benefiting from its close proximity to regional centers such as Atlanta, GA and Birmingham, AL. Faculty and students have access to major archives and libraries locally and regionally, including those of Emory University, the Carter Center, the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, the National Infantry Museum, and Auburn University in addition to several local repositories of archival materials and collections.

Columbus is a cosmopolitan hub for the entire region, the second-largest city in the state, and a place of transformation. The city is a unique amalgamation of the "traditional American South:" world-travelers, local people, and businesses coming together as the perfect location for a student-centered university like Columbus State University. The university is not too big as to make a student feel like "just a number," nor too small as to be isolating or limited in diverse people and viewpoints. Founded as a Chattahoochee Valley mill-town in the early 1800s and going through a slump as many similar cities did in the mid-twentieth century, Columbus is now a modernized place with a rich history perfect for students of history and geography.

At the heart of the city is the revitalized Uptown, filled with everything from great coffee shops, diverse restaurants, trendy boutiques, music venues, art galleries, and Columbus State's RiverPark Campus. Alongside the Chattahoochee River and the Columbus River Walk is where you'll find the History and Geography department, the ideal location for our students to live and work.
